Cooking with the Moms
Even though fresh tomatoes are a bit dicey this time of year in New England, it's nice to know you can still savor the summer's best tomatoes...from a can. It's also nice to know that canned tomatoes are higher in the cancer-fighting antioxidant, lycopene, than fresh tomatoes. Why? Because the heat from cooking actually releases this important nutrient. On this week's show, we dish about the culinary benefits of canned tomatoes and feast on a tomato-inspired dinner that Janice recently attended. It was hosted by Muir Glen at a restaurant in Cambridge, MA called Garden at the Cellar. We also share a recipe for tomato soup (it's so rich and creamy, you're going to love it!) and offer up a canned tomato giveaway.

Despite a rough economy and all the free recipes available on food blogs and recipe sites, cookbook sales are stronger than ever. In fact, according to a piece in the Huffington Post, cookbooks are the only book sector on the rise (yippee, hooray, oh happy day!). We have been asked to review quite a few cookbooks this year — two of our faves were The Essential New York Times Cookbook and Cookie Swap! --- and recently, the books have really started to pile up. So for this week's show, we decided to move the pile from Janice's bookshelf to our podcast studio (AKA Janice’s card table) and to share highlights from some of the newest food and nutrition books to hit the market. We also cooked up a recipe for Fruitcake Cupcakes (we think they're more "muffin" than "cupcake") from a new book called, FoodFest 365!

Canned pumpkin, eggs, cabbage, kale, yogurt, potatoes, oatmeal, quinoa, frozen blueberries, and canned salmon can bring you and your family huge health benefits for just pennies a day. We show you how to fill your shopping cart with some of the planet's most wholesome foods, and we also cook up a brand new recipe (created just for you) for Sweet Turkey & Quinoa Meatballs. This recipe is perfect for Superbowl Sunday or any winter tailgate party.
