Cooking with the Moms
Should all Americans pay closer attention to shaking the salt habit? The answer is, "Yes" according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, a group established to update the 2005 Dietary Guidelines. According to the committee, "On average, Americans of all ages consume too few vegetables, fruits, high-fiber whole grains, low-fat milk and milk products, and seafood, and they eat too much added sugars, solid fats, refined grains, and sodium." To that end, they suggest we all lower our sodium intake to 1,500 milligrams a day --- a lofty goal indeed given that, on average, Americans consume 4,000 milligrams daily. So in this show, we explore ways to cut back on sodium...everything from navigating the supermarket aisles to new ways to prepare food.

The manuscript for our new cookbook, NO WHINE WITH DINNER: 150 Healthy, Kid-Tested Recipes from The Meal Makeover Moms is done! The book will be available in early October, 2010, and we can't wait for everyone to see it. We wrote the book with the help of the many moms in our social media network. They tested recipes and offered feedback, and many sent us their best secrets for getting picky eaters to try new foods...without complaint. The goal of the book is turn mealtime whines into "wows." During today's show, we shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of our new book.
